Haiku on photo #11

Haiku on photo #12

INOUE, Seigetsu (1822?-1887) is a legendary bleaching haiku-poet in Japan.

At the time when he wrote this haiku, he would be on his way of bleaching journey with his good friends.

It is uncertain who they were though, Having such friends, partners or coworkers to do something with, it must be the best factor to spend the time finely.

The picture is a scene of mountaineering in modern. The happy feeling of having good friends in lifetime will not change, no matter when or where we live.

''雲の峰KUMO NO MINE (peaks of clouds)'' is metaphor of cumulonimbus and it's a seasonal word of summer.

We can imagine the lifestyle of Seigetsu in real through this haiku.

He didn't have anything for his house to stay, just only some cloths to wear, tools to write, a water bottle gourd and a cane. Meanwhile living in Ina, he moved from villages to villages to find out someone to put him up for some nights, also slept outside so often then he couldn't find the house.

For such a bleaching poet, even a puddle of rain could be a useful material to maintain his writing tools. In old days of Japan, they used thin brush and Chinese ink to write/draw.

Actually he might washed his brushes in the puddle of rain on the ground, possibly it would be coluored in black.

''潦NIWATAZUMI'' means ''puddle of water'' in old japanese but it's not popular now. Today we call it ''水たまりMIZU-TAMARI''
