INOUE, Seigetsu (1822?-1887) is a legendary bleaching haiku-poet in Japan.
”菊KIKU” or chrysanthemum is one of the symbolic flower for late autumn. Seigetsu would drank given sake without any tidbit but enjoyed it with gazing at the mum blossom. In some high grade Japanese restaurant, sometimes they put the petals of edible mum flower on the dishes for decoration, but I guess he didn't eat them.
In ancient Japanese myth, a goddess called "菊理姫KIKURI(KUKURI)-HIME" appears as the divider and the harmonizer between the living world and death world. Still we have the custom of dedicating mum flowers for mourning. It is considerable that the mum blossom can be the sign of entering into winter.

The wind in late autumn gets colder day by day, Seigetsu found it as the remains of the autumn leaves like the souvenir of the passing season.
There is a episode that he handed seasoned leaves to his friends as the souvenir of his travel. Indeed his had no money to buy something then but maybe not only for it. He would think that was the best way to tell them the feeling he had got at the travel.
In Japanese, "言葉KOTOBA" which means language or words includes
the letter of "葉HA", it means leaf.

At the beginning of winter, we see ice on the water in some northern places and high lands. The ice he saw would seem like a construction of architecture. But in this season, it wouldn't stay long and melted within the daytime.
He would have fun for watcing the shape of the ice and look forward to see the art work of nature in the next morning.
The picture was taken in October at about 2,700M altitude on Mt. Kiso-Komagatake. We can see the summit of this mountain from the village of Ina where he lived.
